And by that I mean, if you have to choose one all around *car* for Baja. The SEAT FreeTrack. Oh, sure, most of the world looks at it and scratches their heads (except for the US which never sees any at all), but it's an almost perfect vehicle for this place.

1. it's compact on the outside, which is very helpful for getting around and parking here.

2. it's fairly big and comfortable on the inside with a huge trunk for carrying stuff from Home Depot.

3. it's got a 200HP turbo, same as a Golf GTI and great handling, almost like a Golf GTI, including the fit and feel of it.

4. it's got just big enough wheels and ground clearance to get you most anywhere deep into the Sierras (at least on something resembling a road).

5. it's got automatic 4-wheel drive so it won't get stuck in an arroyo (probably).

6. it's got the new DSG automated dual clutch transmission, which gets rid of all that shifting at the 4 alto intersections.

7. it's just different.

Well, the only problem is, I need it like I need a hole in the head and it might as well be 280 *million* pesos for all the money I have right now. But it does combine my favorite aspects of the two cars we have - the sportiness of the Mazda, the surprisingly off roadable nature of the VW SportVan/CrossFox (but on steroids) and the coolness and spunk of a Golf GTI (or even Audi A3). I like it! Well, best non-SUV car I've seen for La Paz. I even kinda like the reviews that don't quite understand the point of it. Now I just need to come up with money and an excuse.

Darn! Just found out they *don't* import the 4-wheel drive version here because it's more like 400,000 pesos. Just the 2-wheel drive. Ah, well. Still cool, just not quite *as* cool.

Maybe it falls in second place to the new VW turbodiesel pickup -
